Schalke 04 had the opportunity to wrap up the final Champions League spot from Germany on Saturday by picking up 3 points. However, Jens Keller’s side went down 2-1 at home to VfB Stuttgart in their final home game of the season.

Stuttgart hit Schalke on the break for the first goal with Ibrahima Traoré crossing low from the left for Vedad Ibisevic to poke home from inside the six-yard box. A long ball upfield midway through the second half led the away side’s second goal, this time Christian Gentner crossed low from the left for the Bosnian to control unmarked in the penalty area before composing himself and finishing from 7 yards.

Sven Ulreich deflected a cross into his own net in stoppage time for Schalke’s consolation. 3 points for the Reds means a top half finish is possible heading into the final game of the season next week.

SC Freiburg took advantage of Schalke’s loss and boosted their chances of Champions League football next season by coming from behind to win 2-1 in Greuther Fürth. Jonathan Schmid and Max Kruse scored the goals for the away side in the second half after the Clover Leaves had taken the lead inside 3 minutes through Matthias Zimmermann.

The defeat means Greuther Fürth are the first team in the history of the Bundesliga to go a whole season without winning a single home game. As for Freiburg, they are 1 point behind Schalke for that fourth spot and they host the Royal Blues next weekend in what is essentially a playoff for a Champions League playoff spot.

Eintracht Frankfurt aren’t mathematically out of the equation yet either but would take something miraculous for the Eagles to finish fourth. Armin Veh’s side kept their slim hopes of doing so alive with a 1-1 draw in Werder Bremen. Srdjan Lakić equalised early in the second half after Kevin De Bruyne on loan from Chelsea FC had given the Green-Whites a first-half lead. For Frankfurt to finish fourth, they must beat VfL Wolfsburg by 5 games or more whilst Freiburg and Schalke draw.
