The Mirror are reporting that Newcastle United are joining Arsenal in their interest over MLS sensation and Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron.
The 23 year old is a Paraguayan international with 10 caps to his name. A relative unknown until his performances in the MLS this season, Almiron is a tricky customer who can play anywhere across the front line due to his pace and finishing abilities, but is predominantly a number 10 for club and country due to his exceptionally close control and eye for a pass.
He finished the regular MLS season with 9 goals in 30 appearances for Atlanta as they narrowly missed out on the conference Semi finals, losing out on penalties to Columbus Crew.
Arsenal have been regularly linked with the player over the last couple of months with Arsene Wenger looking to bring him in as a replacement for Mesut Ozil, if he doesn’t renew his contract.
Rafa Benitez is now interested in Almiron with Newcastle looking for a number 10 to help their forward line and create chances for the misfiring strikers.
Almiron is seen as an alternative to Spaniard Perez in the number 10 role. However Inter Milan are also believed to have joined the race for a player available for the modest fee of £15 million. A player in the mould of Philippe Coutinho even if he’s not at the same level yet, there will be an increasing amount of suitors for Almiron as the January window approaches. If Rafa Benitez can pull off a coup and sign Almiron, then he will bolster Newcastle’s chances of finishing in a Europa League spot this season.
