Arsenal player ratings:

Cech – Unluckily conceded from Tadic’s free kick as it came back off the woodwork, onto his back and in. Other than that, he was his usual classy self when called upon. (7)

Bellerin – Great at attacking, but had lapses in concentration at the back. (6)

Mustafi – Looks as though he’s settled in already, putting in a solid display on his debut. (7)

Koscielny – Scored an incredible overhead kick late on in the first half which inspired his team to turn the game around. (8)

Monreal – Gave away the free kick which led to Southampton’s goal. Booked. (6)

Cazorla – Man of the match, if anyone was going to get the winner it looked like being him. Booked. (9)

Coquelin – Preferred ahead of Xhaka for some strange reason, but put in a wholehearted display to help his team to victory. (7)

Walcott – Looked livelier than usual, but still questionable passes from him. (6)

Ozil – Not quite on his game, otherwise Arsenal may have played much better, but still some flashes of brilliance. (7)

Oxlade-Chamberlain – Hard to tell if he was playing or not at times as he was so quiet against his former club. (5)

Perez – Somewhat ineffective on his debut as he managed just one shot on target all game. Might improve as he gets more game time. (5)

Giroud – Had a a few chances, but became frustrated after each miss. (6)

Sanchez – Arguably changed the game as his attacking presence gave Arsenal the edge. (7)

Iwobi – Lively character,

Southampton player ratings:

Forster – Faced only two shots on target all afternoon and both flew into the back of the net. Booked. (5)

Cedric – Solid performance from him as the Saints’ defence looked strong for most of the game. (6)

Fonte – Gave away the penalty in the dying minutes of the game, after a shirt pull on Giroud. (6)

Van Dijk – Excellent game for him, made some vital blocks and tackles. (7)

Bertrand – Looked a little rusty as he’s just returned from injury (6)

Clasie – Decent display from the Dutchman before he went off with an injury. (6)

Romeu – Solid defensive midfield display, but didn’t threaten going forward. (6)

Davis – Did a good job in midfield and kept Arsenal’s players quiet for most of the game. (6)

Tadic – Probably Southampton’s best player on the day, creative spark in the midfield and threatened from set pieces. (7)

Rodriguez – Very poor performance as he offered nothing. Subbed at half time. (5)

Redmond – Always looked threatening with his electric pace. (7)

Long – Wasted many chances to put Southampton ahead, should have scored when he was unmarked from a Tadic free kick and was denied by Cech on several occasions. (6)

Hojbjerg – Came on for Clasie in the second half and looked like a decent young player, put in a good shift. (6)

Ward-Prowse – Came on late and therefore didn’t have enough time to create any real impact. (6)
