Manchester United come into this game after being on the receiving end of a 1-0 defeat by reigning champions Chelsea. 11th place Newcastle also lost by the same scoreline to Bournemouth who battled their way out the relegation zone. United sit in second but their defeat sees them emerge from the international break eight points behind local rivals Manchester City, with the Red Devils hoping that they slip up away at Leicester.
If Tottenham drop points in their North London derby against Arsenal, a United win would see them consolidate second place.
The Reds’ have a fresh injury worry, with Phil Jones forced off during England’s 0-0 draw with Germany. Marcos Rojo, Michael Carrick, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba all are nearing return but Saturday’s game comes too soon. Newcastle could be missing Christian Atsu, Jamaal Lascelles and Mikel Merino, all who have taken recent knocks and will face late fitness tests.
This game is a must win for United if they are to be taken seriously as title contenders. Fortunately for the home side they have won 22 of their last 32 matches at Old Trafford and have only lost one. They are also unbeaten in 22 Premier League home matches and, unfortunately for The Magpies, they haven’t conceded in their last six, so their chances of finding a way past David De Gea are slim.
Newcastle have only kept a clean sheet once in their five away games in the Premier League this season. They have lost three of those matches and have only won one, they will have to leave this form well behind them if they want to stay clear of relegation. If Newcastle were to find a way of breaking down United, they could climb up to eighth in the table if results go their way. The fifteen goals the Red Devils have scored at home in the Premier League say that this will be a hard task, Lukaku scoring four and Martial with three in Manchester, will be key to the Old Trafford winning streak continuing.
Prediction: Manchester United 3 – 0 Newcastle United
