Louis van Gaal has seen enough from Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao to convince him a new striker is needed at Old Trafford if he is to bring success back to the club.

As a result, Manchester United are reportedly in talks with Paris Saint-Germain over a big-money move for Edison Cavani.

In just his second season with the French giants, Cavani has already managed to find the net on 45 occasions for the club and has played a vital role in both their progression to the Champions League quarter finals and their ascension to the top of Ligue 1.

The Uruguayan forward also scored a brace on 11 April to clinch the French League Cup for PSG.

However, his league form has not been of the expected standard this campaign as he has only had a hand in nine goals, the exact same number as Falcao.

Playing second-fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic has meant that the 28-year-old has spent a large portion of his games out on the wing, a position he is not comfortable with and one of the reasons for his lack of goals this season.

I don’t want to talk about sacrifices because making efforts has always been part of my game. But now I am more defensive and it is more difficult because when you came, it was with other ideas and other views about your position in the team and the club.”

His difficult relationship with coach Laurent Blanc has been well documented and, as a result, United have pounced early in order to land their number one target.

Cavani is expected to cost around £55m and wages up to £300 000 per week which could prove a huge gamble if van Gaal subjects him to the sort of treatment Falcao has had to deal with since making the move to Old Trafford.
