Manchester United are interested in Schalke’s Germany international midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to Sky Sports.

The report suggests that United could approach Goretzka, 22, in January, when he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, as his contract at the Bundesliga club is set to expire in the summer.

United are the latest in a list of clubs which also includes Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Liverpool to be linked with a move for the dynamic midfielder. The opportunity to land one of Europe’s biggest rising stars will surely spark a bidding war among Europe’s elite clubs.

A powerful and technically gifted midfielder, Goretzka plays primarily in the box-to-box role, with exceptional ability to cover the ground and make strong runs through the heart of midfield to initiate attacks for his team.

The 6 ft 2 Schalke man has clocked up 100 appearances for his club in Gelsenkirchen since 2013. Goretzka rose to global prominence during the Confederations Cup last summer, as he played a starring role in an experimental German side which went on to win the tournament.

Should Jose Mourinho’s United make a move for Goretzka, the Red Devils would gain a player who would bring added injections of both energy and creativity which have often been lacking when Paul Pogba has been absent from the side this season.

With abundances of drive, flair and a rangy ability to track back from end-to-end in midfield, Goretzka could provide the perfect foil for the likes of Pogba and Nemanja Matic in the United engine room.

Moreover, with the ongoing concerns over Marouane Fellaini, who is in the same contractual situation at United as Goretzka with his club, the German could provide the ideal replacement for the towering Belgian midfielder, who Mourinho views as an important figure in United’s squad, but looks likely to depart the club by the end of the season.

Should Goretzka arrive at United in the next six months, it would represent another major coup for Mourinho and kickstart the next phase of superstar recruitment at Old Trafford ahead of next summer.
