First plays third in the tea time Premiership fixture on Saturday and Manchester United will go to the Champions elect in buoyant mood after their 4-2 derby dismantling of Manchester City on Sunday.
Chelsea could make one change from the 1-0 victory against QPR as they may have Loic Remy back available for selection after his injury against Stoke.
Diego Costa will miss the match after suffering an injury against the same side two weeks ago.
Concerning news has come out of Van Gaal’s pre match press conference that could see United hit with a mini injury crisis for the trip to the the capital. Michael Carrick limped out of the game with city with 10 minutes to go and will sit this one out but it is the defence where the real problems lie for van Gaal.
United have three centre backs unavailable with Jones and Rojo missing with injury whilst Jonny Evans continues to serve a suspension.
Daley Blind is also absent with an ankle injury. This means that Chris Smalling will be partnered by either Paddy McNair or Tyler Blackett with the latter possibly preferred due his left footed bias.
Luke Shaw and Robin Van Persie are both pushing for a return to the side and with Blind missing this game it will most likely see Shaw take his place. Van Persie should be fit to make the bench and we could also see a rare start for Falcao with Rooney set to reprise his midfield role in Carrick’s absence.
Van Gaal has managed to turn around United’s horrific form against the top sides that was shown under Moyes last season but their recent form and new found team discipline will be under its sternest test as van Gaal and Mourinho pit their wits against each other for the final time this season. Saturday’s game is set to be a mouth watering precursor to next season title race.
