Liverpool once again go into the summer offseason in need of player reinforcements. Once more, the Reds are in desperate need of a goalkeeper and it looks likely the club will finally address their greatest need.
Before the club fully go into the summer transfer window, Liverpool will contest the Champions League final against Real Madrid. The Spanish side has been given the favourites tag by sportsbooks, including https://www.bettingsites.ng but the Reds could upset Real Madrid in another epic European Cup final.
Liverpool look set to miss out on transfer targets Jan Oblak and Alisson. Atletico Madrid’s Oblak signed a new contract with the Spanish club this week. His new contract has a €180 million release clause.
Roma sporting director Monchi has already stated their goalkeeper Alisson is off-limits this summer. Prompting both Liverpool and Real Madrid to re-evaluate their plans. So, who could Liverpool sign to take over the No. 1 shirt?
Of course, the club could stick with incumbent Loris Karius. The goalkeeper has played well enough since taking over for the mistaken prone Simon Mignolet.
Despite his improvements in Liverpool’s net, the Reds are being linked to several big money goalkeeper transfers. However, it seems the players Jurgen Klopp desired are now following off of the Liverpool wish list.
In recent days, Liverpool have been heavily linked with AC Milan teenage goalkeeping sensation Gianluigi Donnarumma. Just 19, Donnarumma could theoretically be Liverpool’s goalkeeper for the next 10 years.
Donnarumma made his debut at age 16 for Milan and has since become the club’s everyday goalkeeper. He posted 12 clean sheets in Serie A this season, which tied him for fifth most.
Liverpool have allegedly offered Milan £35 million plus a player, perhaps Mignolet, to sign Donnarumma. Milan have already said they want £70m for the teenager. Having the chance to play Champions League football for the first time may influence Donnarumma and agent Mino Raiola to push the deal through.
It is important to note Italians haven’t fared well at Anfield. Andrea Dossena, Alberto Aquilani and Mario Balotelli were all major failures.
Jack Butland has been called a “priority signing” for Jurgen Klopp ahead of next season. The Stoke goalkeeper has improved greatly, but it is unknown if Butland would be given the Liverpool No. 1 shirt or used as a backup.
At just 25, Butland still has time to develop further. He recorded just six clean sheets for Stoke. Stoke were relegated from the Premier League, and the club gave up the most goals (68). His signing wouldn’t fill to many Reds supporters with excitement. However, a deal for the shot stopper may not cost Liverpool much money due to Stoke’s relegation.
Klopp has been quoted as saying he wants four players to join in the summer. He already has Naby Keita arriving from RB Leipzig; however, the club will be losing Emre Can.
While the Champions League final will be difficult, it looks like finding new recruits this offseason could be just as hard for Klopp and company.
