The final day of the 2012-13 German Bundesliga saw a number of eventful games whilst 1899 Hoffenheim avoided automatic relegation in dramatic circumstances to secure a relegation playoff spot instead.
Hannover 96 vs Fortuna Düsseldorf: The relegation situation was more-or-less in Fortuna Düsseldorf’s hands heading into the final game of the season. Matching FC Augsburg’s result and not lose 3 points to Hoffenheim and they would avoid relegation, baring a huge swing in goals.
However, despite little to play for for the hosts, Fortuna Düsseldorf had picked up just 3 points from their previous 11 games heading into their trip to the AWD Arena.
The visitors true to their form rarely threatened in this match and fell behind on 36 minutes when Hannover captain Steve Cherundolo slid in Mame Diouf. The Senegalese striker finished well with his first touch inside the penalty area. That was Diouf’s 12th goal of the season and with one year left on his contract it is not known yet if the Reds will cash in on their top scorer over the summer.
Mathis Bolly had a rare chance for the visitors in the first half when he rounded goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler. The Norwegian could only hit the post from a tight angle.
Fortuna Düsseldorf were losing control of their own destiny on 61 minutes when Diouf lured goalkeeper Fabian Giefer before squaring to Didier Ya Konan to give his side a 2-0 advantage.
The Ivorian striker had his second of the game later when he had time to take a couple of touches inside the penalty area before slotting home. At full-time, Fortuna Düsseldorf were waiting on results elsewhere to dictate where they would be heading.
