A top 4 spot and Champions League is looking more unlikely for Eintracht Frankfurt but they are edging closer to next season’s Europa League as they made it 7 points from a possible 9 with a 3-1 victory over relegation-threatened Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday.

The home side were in control of the game before they final broke through after half hour. Number 14 Alex Meier scored his 14th Bundesliga goal of the season, tapping into an empty net after Srdjan Lakic’s effort was parried into his path by goalkeeper Fabian Giefer.

The Croatian striker scored only his 3rd goal of the season 5 minutes into the second half when he out-jumped two defenders from a corner to head low into the net. Giefer was able to get a touch on the ball, but this only guided it past his own defender on the goalline and into the corner of the net.

Dani Schahin’s solo effort gave the visitors brief hope 12 minutes from time before Meier’s second goal of the game three minutes from time wrapped up the points for the home side. The effort itself was a contender for goal of the week, shooting across goal into the top corner from the left-hand edge of the box.

Fortuna Düsseldorf remained outside the relegation playoff on virtue of goal difference and just 2 points above 1899 Hoffenheim who occupy the second automatic relegation spot.

SC Freiburg returned to winning ways after back-to-back defeats to maintain sixth place and a Europa League spot next season if they don’t drop any places in their final two fixtures.

The Eagles were 2-0 winners over FC Augsburg on Sunday in a game that kept both goalkeepers busy. Oliver Baumann and Alex Manninger took the plaudits in this one with a number of fine saves. However, the visiting Austrian goalkeeper may feel at fault for Cedric Makiadi’s opening goal on 30 minutes when he parried Jonathan Schmid’s powerful effort onto the shins of the midfielder and into the net to give the home side the lead.

Schmid grabbed the second 30 minutes later with a low, powerful effort from 17 yards after getting in behind the defence. Baumann made smart saves from Sascha Mölders and André Hahn in the first half on his way to collecting his 13th clean sheet of the season.
