Southampton fans must be fed up with their players moving to Merseyside by now, however, whilst it is true a club from the North-West do wish to poach another of their players, it is not the team in red doing the poaching.

Everton are the team reportedly looking to sign Jose Fonte. Southampton’s former manager Ronald Koeman wishes to bring the Portuguese defender to Goodison Park in order to help make a side, which leaked goals for fun last season, much more solid.

Everton are under new ownership and were expected to be big spenders during the window, although that has not come to fruition just yet.

Fonte would represent a step in the right direction but it would be interested to see how he would slot into an already aged defence, with Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka being in their ranks.

For Everton, keeping Stones was too big of a task to meet, but  Fonte would be a terrific replacement for Everton, with established full-backs Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines on either flank providing further quality to the Toffees defence.

Southampton may prove difficult to negotiate with however. After losing the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama already in this window, new manager Claude Puel could decide that the door is now closed on further first team departures.

With the window now in August, it is imperative that Everton strengthen decisively and quickly or what began as a summer filled with promise could soon turn into a struggle to find signatures.
