In the history of both these 5 time Champions League winning giants; this will be the first time the clubs will play on English soil, with previous meetings being played in the UEFA Super Cup final in 2001 (France) and the Audi Cup in the 2017 pre-season (Germany). Liverpool walked away winners in both meetings, 3-2 and 3-0 respectively.
Liverpool have an outstanding home record in Europe, they’re currently 19 games unbeaten with 14 wins and they also won all of their group stage games this season including wins over PSG and Napoli. Unfortunately for the Reds, Virgil Van Dijk will miss tonight’s game due to picking up too many yellow cards, the Dutchman has been pivotal to Liverpool’s defence and this will be the first game he’s missed in the Champions League or Premier league this season.
Klopp’s side will also likely be without Dejan Lovren and Roberto Firmino who both missed training yesterday which more than likely will mean a defensive pairing of Matip and Fabinho.
Bayern have been nowhere near their usual standards this season with goals being leaked on a regular basis, they’ve conceded 8 in their last 4 away games in all competitions which will not be helped by the missing Jerome Boateng (stomach flu). Robert Lewandowski is the competitions top scorer with 8 goals and will solely be relied on tonight due to the suspension of Thomas Muller after his ridiculous sending off vs Ajax.
With Liverpool’s injury and suspension woes, Bayern will be looking to capitalize and claim much needed away goals but Liverpool’s world class attack should open the gates against a seemingly lackluster Bayern defence.
