Mario Pasalic took his Elche side out the La Liga relegation zone as they beat Cordoba 2-0 at the Nuevo Arcangel.

Despite a positive start to the game the home team were punished by Edu Albacar’s first-half freekick and Pasalic’s second-half header which secured victory for Los Ilicitanos.

Borja Garcia received a straight red card late into the game for a head-butt on Victor Rodriguez in a result that means Cordoba are almost certainly destined to spend next season in the Liga Adelente,

Elche now sit in 15th and will hope to bolster their chances of survival as they host Real Sociedad next Monday.

The game began with a few promising crosses from former Manchester United player Bebe the best of which Luso was unable to control with his volley.

Aaron Niguez fired wide as he squandered a good chance for the away side after Rodriguez picked him out in the 12th minute.

The best chance for Cordoba came when Bebe’s through ball found Federico Cartabia who cut inside the box past David Lomban but struck the ball over the crossbar.

Before the break, Edu Albacar’s inswinging freekick into Enzo Roco trickled into the net due to both poor defending and poor goalkeeping.

As the second half begun Chelea-loanee Pasalic had an excellent chance to double to lead but showed a lack of composure when he was free in the box hooking the ball horribly wide

Cordoba then had a chance to equalise as Rene Krhin headed against the post before Pasalic headed in himself on the other side of the pitch.

Borja Garcia was sent off in the 81st minute for headbutting Rodriguez in the face before Luso tapped in a goal that was deemed offside.
