Manchester United are ready to offer flop Marcos Rojo a way out of Old Trafford in a part exchange deal with Southampton for Jose Fonte according to reports.
Rojo was signed from Sporting Lisbon two years ago for £16million after a solid world cup for Argentina but his Old Trafford career has never really taken off. He was an unused substitute at the weekend for United’s season opener against Bournemouth.
Jose Mourinho has long courted Jose Fonte this summer and the 32 year old Euro’s winner is open to a move to Old Trafford according to The Manchester Evening News.
Southampton have offered their captain a new bumper deal to try and persuade him to stay at St Mary’s but he is yet to sign and many Saints fans are worried this could mean the end of his Southampton career.
Arsenal are also interested in the centre back after injuries have ripped through their back line in pre season, although Fonte is seen to prefer to join up with his fellow countryman Jose Mourinho.
Saints manager Claude Puel has called the rumours “strange”, saying:
“There is no problem with Jose, it is just strange that this rumour comes just before the game at United,” the Frenchman said.
“There is a possibility that he may travel with us to Old Trafford.
“But he is a very good professional and he has played well in training sessions this week and it is important to have Jose with us, I hope, for the United game.
“Jose has good experience, so he cannot be disturbed by this rumour but I am just surprised to hear this before the game, two days before the match. But Jose is our captain and I’m sure he will be completely ready for this game.”
With the season now beginning to get into full swing, all parties will hope to wrap this up either way sooner rather than later.
