A routine 2-0 victory at 1. FC Nürnberg for Bayer Leverkusen confirmed Sami Hyypia’s side will be competing in their eighth Champions League campaign next season as they wrapped up third spot, in the process becoming the only side in the current top 4 to win at the Grundig Stadium this season.

Ömer Toprak opened the scoring in the first half with a free header 5 yards out from a corner. The Turkish centre-back’s first Bundesliga goal. Centre-back for Nürnberg, Per Nilsson had a chance to level the score in the second half from a corner, but poked wide from 3 yards out.

Shortly after, he would block André Schürrle’s effort inside the penalty area with both hands raised above his head. Stefan Kießling’s successful resulting spot kick resulted in his 23rd Bundesliga goal of the season – a club record, beating Ulf Kirsten. The home side rarely threatened throughout the match and the closest they came saw Mike Frantz’s goalbound header cleared off the line by Toprak.

Sidney Sam had a chance to make it 3-0 with a spot kick himself in the final 10 minutes after Tim Klose pulled Kießling down. But the forward hit the outside of the post as the game ended 2-0.

Schalke 04 need 4 points from their final two fixtures to guarantee 4th spot and a Champions League playoff match next season. The Royal Blues were 1-0 winners in Gladbach on Friday evening to take them up to 52 points on the season, 3 more than Eintracht Frankfurt below them.

Jen Keller’s side have won 7 of their last 10 now and the only goal of this game came in the final 10 minutes from Julian Draxler. The young German sensation scoring his ninth league goal of the season.

Schalke have only dropped points on one occasion in which Draxler has scored this season, and that came in the reverse fixture between these two sides when Borussia Mönchengladbach came away with a 1-1 draw at the Veltins Arena.
