Arsenal were heading for a disappointing draw, until Santi Cazorla’s injury time winner allowed the Gunners to exit the Emirates Stadium with three points and left Southampton empty handed.
The result leaves Arsenal in 7th place in the Premier League, whilst Southampton currently languish in 18th and are without a win this season.
It all started brightly for the Saints, as they took an 18th minute lead through Petr Cech’s own goal. Dusan Tadic’s free kick was initially helped onto the crossbar by Cech, only to bounce back off the goalkeeper and into the net.
Around 10 minutes later, Laurent Koscielny levelled the scores with an impressive overhead kick to net his first goal of the season.
Despite Arsenal having more of the possession and more shots, they failed to create too many clear cut goal scoring chances, and with Southampton looking defensively solid, it took until the 94th minute for the home side to secure the win.
Olivier Giroud was adjudged to have been fouled by Jose Fonte in the penalty box, and that provided Cazorla the opportunity to win the game from 12 yards, an opportunity he very much took.
Southampton will be absolutely ruing the fact that they took no points from a game in which they took more shots on target than their hosts, and generally didn’t disgrace themselves.
From Arsenal’s point of view, they’ll be thanking Koscielny and Cazorla for their moments of brilliance, which ensured them a massively important 3 points.
They’ll look to continue this winning form in their next league outing, a trip to Hull City on Saturday. Southampton will host Swansea on Sunday.
