According to the Daily Star, Arsenal have emerged as the shock favourites to land Manchester United reserve keeper Sergio Romero in the January transfer window.
The 30 year old stopper has been subject to just 6 Premier League games since his move from Sampdoria back in 2015, however, he is the cup keeper who regularly features in the Champions League, FA Cup and the Carabao Cup. The lack of game time is down to the ever growing stature of no.1 goalkeeping star David De Gea and wants regular game time as he believes he is in danger of missing out on the Argentina squad for next summer’s World Cup in Russia.
Bookmakers Ladbrokes have placed Arsenal as favourites to land him in the January Sales. Alex Apati of Ladbrokes has said “With David de Gea on the scene, Romero is never going to break into Mourinho’s first-team plans – and it now looks likely that Wenger will take advantage of the Argentine’s availability.”
With Arsene Wenger interested in Romero, the future of Arsenal’s number 2 looks bleak. David Ospina who also features in cup competitions looks set to be relieved of his duties at the Emirates potentially to make way for Romero. With Petr Cech getting older and long-standing rumours of De Gea to Real Madrid still ongoing, this could be the chance Romero is looking for to finally get his Premier League career off up and running at either of the two clubs.
Before he would be allowed to leave in January, Romero has still got chances to warrant his stay at Old Trafford with Manchester United’s hectic schedule. The Red Devils entertain Bristol City in the Carabao Cup next week in between league games against West Brom and Bournemouth.
