FC Groningen defender, Virgil van Dijk, has come onto the radar of several Premier League clubs according to the player himself. Newcastle are thought to be interested in the 21-year-old but Van Dijk has also been quoted as saying:
I know certain clubs are following me and that Everton are one of them.”
Van Dijk has been touted as one of the most promising young talents in the Eredivisie, known for his attacking qualities as well as his defensive ones. The youngster has 3 assists and 2 goals in 18 league games this season – a ridiculous record for a central defender! Nowadays, it seems we just expect to see great young talented footballers emanating from the Netherlands. Van Dijk is certainly a player full of potential and I would not be surprised to see him playing at a higher level soon.
FC Groningen sit just two places outside the relegation zone in the Dutch top league so a move to Newcastle or Everton would definitely be a favourable one for Van Dijk. However, Everton seem the more likely club to tempt the player as they lead their transfer contenders, Newcastle, by 10 places in the Premier League. Also, as first team regular Sylvain Distin reaches the grand old age of 35, a young promising center-back could be just the player David Moyes might need to take his place.
Although Van Dijk is a great talent, he isn’t playing at the highest level of football and I think this will keep his transfer fee within Everton’s tight budget. The young Dutchman is understandably very serious about his future and does not want to rush into any decisions which might hinder his progression. When commenting on Everton’s interest, Van Dijk said:
Of course I am flattered by the interest but I have to make sure I make the best choice for my future career.”
