An old rivalry will re-surface on Wednesday, as Leeds United take on old time rivals Chelsea in the Capital One Cup quarter-final. The two sides will meet for the first time since Leeds United’s relegation from the Premier League back in 03-04.
The last meeting between the two clubs was nine years ago. Leeds United were struggling at the foot of the table, whilst Chelsea were topping the table under the Roman Revolution. A wonder goal from Jermaine Pennant for Leeds was cancelled out by an equaliser from Damien Duff.
Oh how times have changed. I’d do anything for the club to be back in the Premier League, battling it out with Chelsea and rekindling the famous rivalry from the Don Revie era that is now a distant memory.
Tomorrow’s game will be intense with a high tempo and sparks will hopefully fly, as Dirty Leeds look to put one over on a now less than English Chelsea side. Will the likes of Fernando Torres, Juan Mata and David Luiz be prepared for a sold out Elland Road chanting:
‘We hate Chelsea We hate Chelsea!’
I can see it being Chelsea’s toughest game this season and Rafa Benitez will have to think twice about putting inexperience on the pitch, as Neil Warnock’s side aim for a third Premier League scalp in the competition.
That being said, Chelsea ooze flair and class. The likes of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata may be too hot to handle for Leeds, but if Bradford can knock Arsenal out, then Leeds can knock Chelsea out. Having recently spent time in Japan for the World Club Championship, Chelsea will be very tired from their delayed journey back to the UK.
Hopefully they are still jet lagged when they land in Leeds, for a tie that the whole country is likely to be watching.
Let’s go bold with the prediction, but not so it looks like I’m living in a deluded Leeds United winter wonderland. A score draw is my ‘tip’ with the outcome being anyone’s guess. Prediction – Leeds 1 Chelsea 1 (anyone’s guess after that)
