As Chelsea attempt to earn more victories and create a good run of form, Rafael Benitez (or rather Roman Abramovich) may look to Barcelona for a central midfielder who can make the difference. Sergio Busquets is apparently now on the owner’s radar and could be Chelsea’s next big money move.
Top Chelsea scout Scott McLachlan supposedly took a trip to the Camp Nou last week to watch the Catalan midfielder in action. Abramovich may want to sign Busquets in January but, with Chelsea being ejected from the Champions League in the group stages, I think a summer transfer is a more likely outcome.
Coming through Barcelona’s renowned youth system, Sergio Busquets is regarded as one of the best holding midfielders in the world. Being one of the very few defensive players in an attack-minded Barcelona team and helping them to win 5 domestic trophies and 2 Champions League trophies, it’s no wonder the centre-midfielder is so highly valued.
However, Busquets has also gained a reputation for his insincerity and lack of sportsmanship. One of the more memorable examples of this was when Thiago Motta of Inter Milan was sent off in a Champions League semi-final (2009-10 season) after Busquets feigned injury and then peeked from behind his hands to check the referee had seen his dive.
Chelsea are already a club that opposition fans love to hate. With John Terry’s racial and sexual controversies and Fernando Torres pouting and looking moody every time he blasts a shot over the bar, I can understand why. Do Chelsea really need another player like this? In a time where even Chelsea’s own fans dislike the manager and Abramovich tries to bring more trophies back to Satmford bridge, is another controversial player what they need? I don’t think so.
A top quality holding midfielder like Busquets would be a great signing for Chelsea. A player LIKE Busquets, just not Busquets. Next we’ll be hearing that Chelsea want to buy Mario Balotelli, Luis Suarez and Joey Barton too!
