Robbie Keane has emerged as one of January’s hottest transfer targets as three clubs line up loan moves for the Irishman or so The Daily Mail would have us believe.
Despite Keane rejecting the idea of a short term move back to the Premier League, QPR, Norwich and Aston Villa have set their sights on capturing the 32-year-old. The contenders for the drop hope that Keane, who has been in impressive goalscoring form for LA Galaxy this year will be able to give their side a New Year boost that helps them stave off the threat of relegation.
Should Keane decide to take up the offer of a loan move during January then his most likely option would be a return to Aston Villa, where he scored three goals in seven matches last winter. With Darren Bent out of favour and possibly on his way out of the club, there will be opportunities for Keane to get a sustained run in the first team.
Additionally with the Irishman familiar with the setup at Villa Park then it makes settling into a short term spell a lot easier.
However with Norwich’s current form there is no guarantee that Keane will turn down the opportunity to play at Carrow Road. Chris Hughton’s men lie second in the form table, just behind Manchester United, will hope that survival is not the only positive result that they achieve this season.
Whilst securing Premier League safety may be the Canaries number one target, they will have one eye on trying to beat the 47 points total that they achieved last season, and may even attempt to break into Europe.
Should they come anywhere near to achieving this dream then they will need someone with the quality and experience that Keane possesses, even if it is only to give them a quick boost in the right direction.
