The area of left back has become a problem so tedious and dull for Manchester United that people would rather talk about whether or not Torres will ever get back to form. For a while now Patrice Evra has been showing signs that his best days are over and Ferguson has tried many a new young thing to make an easy transition from the old to the new. First it was Fabio but he isn’t showing the same signs of progression as his brother and Alex Buttner looks like a decent back up at best.
For this reason Ferguson may want to accept the bid of £5 million that Evra’s boyhood team and new super rich kids on the block PSG, are willing to offer for him, according to the Independent. This would be an excellent offer for Evra as the Frenchmen cost United £5.5 million 6 years a go so the suits up stairs will be kept happy whilst puffing on their cigars and discussing other methods to sap the soul out of football.
Of course, for United to accept such an offer would mean they will need a like for like replacement waiting in the wings ready to come out of the smoke to be greeted by crowds of flashing cameras and stupid questions.
Leighton Baines is a man that is always linked with United these days because he is probably on the verge of becoming the best left back in the country. For years the understudy to Ashley Cole, Baines is ready to become number 1 in the left back position and based on club form he deserves it. He has all the attributes needed to play at United; honest, hard working and down to earth. The problem will be prising him out of Everton’s ever financially tightened claws.
Ferguson wants Baines but he also needs a central midfielder of high calibre and won’t want to pay over the odds for Baines if it means leaving little for him to spend on sorting out his ageing central midfield.
What if there was an established international with years of Premiership experience, title medals, a Champions League winning medal and arguably one of the best left back around today available on a free this summer, wouldn’t that be great for United? Well the good news is that a player like this exists, the bad news is it’s Ashley Cole. This is a long shot but if Ferguson thinks the pros out weigh the cons I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go for it. A consultation with Rio Ferdinand would be a good idea after Cole’s ‘evolution’ of what happened between John Terry and Anton Ferdinand last October.
Apart from that world class left backs are as rare as a shiny Charizard in 2001. Lille right back Mathieu Debuchy is wanting a move away from the former French Champions and if he can be persuaded to play on the left then he would be a perfect fit; cheap, in his prime at 27 and another Frenchmen. A player that is doing very well in the Bundesliga, based on his stats, is Christian Fuchs, his surname would also get the expert chant conjurers licking their lips. Currently at Schalke and 26 he has scored 1 and set up 6 in all competitions this season, has 80% pass succession rate and averages 3.3 tackles a game.
If the Independent’s story is true and it certainly looks credible, then the Baines to United story will become as big as the who shot JR storyline on Dallas come January. I still rub my eyes every time RVP is on tele in United’s kit and when Benitez is wearing his suit Chelsea emblem and all, so adding Cole to United’s line up would make this season of the Premiership look more like the 1968 film the Yellow Submarine, surreal.
