According to Italian source Il Tempo, Serie A side Roma are interested in the services of Tottenham’s Paulinho.
Tottenham Hotspur Blog News have also reported on the story suggesting that the Premier League club have turned down a bid for their Brazilian midfielder.
Reports claim that Roma spoke with Tottenham representatives about a possible loan deal with an option to buy. However, Spurs refuse to entertain such an idea as a loan deal would simply decrease the value of the player after a season when the option did arise to buy. If they are going to sell then the London club will want to recoup as much of the £17 million that they paid for him only last Summer.
Paulinho could have his head turned with the promise of Champions League football. Roma have enjoyed a brilliant season in Serie A and look a much improved team than recent years.
Sitting in second place with 82 points, they were serious title contenders for most part of the season, eventually just running out of steam when chasing Juventus. Now back in Europe’s biggest competition next year, and with their fans seeing them so close to the title, they will be wanting to add more quality to their squad so they can continue their progression as a club.
They have previously been known admirers of Paulinho, and were only pipped last summer to his signature by Spurs.
The Brazilian has enjoyed an up and down season in his first year at Spurs. In 34 appearances he has got on the score sheet 7 times, which isn’t a bad contribution. The Premier League has a history of Brazilian players struggling to adapt, but out of all the signings Spurs made last season, bar Erkisen, he looks to have made the biggest contribution.
Paulinho is not the only Tottenham player that Roma are targeting. Defender Jan Vertonghen is another that is said to be high on the wish list of the Serie A giants.
The Mirror are pointing to his desire for Champions League football, which is one of the big factors in seeking a move away.
Spurs fans will be hoping to hold onto their best players next Summer.
There are those in the squad who need to be moved on, but in Paulinho and Vertonghen, Tottenham have two quality players they must try and keep in order to push on next season.
