The appointment of Rafael Benitez as Chelsea interim manager has brought nothing but bad news for the blues owner Roman Abramovich and he is already lining up another man to turn their fortunes around! Well maybe. Maybe not…
Former Chelsea manager Avram Grant is being lined up with a return to the club as a consultant under Rafa’s reign as Abramovich is desperately searching for an answer to his team’s current problems or so The Daily Mail suggested.
The one time Portsmouth and West Ham boss is currently without a job after leaving Partizan Belgrade in the summer and consequently was naturally linked with a return to Stamford Bridge. The backlash from the Chelsea fans over the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo has forced the Russian owner into acknowledging that his choice of interim manager was a big mistake and could do worse than putting his faith in Avram Grant to help turn things around.
After witnessing the two goalless draws last week and the defeat to West Ham at the weekend, Abramovich has to be looking to make sure Chelsea finish in the top four by employing Grant, possibly as a consultant to Benitez.
Qualifying for the Champions League next season has become Abramovich’s number one target looking at the teams recent form and it’s a vital element in luring Pep Guardiola to the Bridge next season.
It is understood that Benitez and Grant have a good relationship and both men certainly have enough experience to turn things around at the Bridge, with Grant already having first hand experience of the pressure in the Chelsea dugout.
The Israeli was in fact in a very similar position to Benitez back in 2007 when he took over from fan favourite Jose Mourinho and had to endure a similar backlash from the fans. Adding Grant to the Chelsea set up will certainly give Benitez an extra boost and his familiar face could be a welcome sight for some of the blues old guard and the fans, which may just lift the pressure on the interim manager.
It’s certainly a step in the right direction for Abramovich, after the catastrophe of appointing Benitez, and this partnership should comfortably steer Chelsea into the top four. It’s a win-win situation for the Chelsea owner if he brings in Grant as he could really be a catalyst in turning around the teams fortunes and the Israeli would be ready to step in if things got even worse for Benitez.
After probably his worst week as Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich needs to start putting things right and the appointment of Avram Grant to aid Rafa Benitez could be the first big step towards the ultimate goal of landing Pep Guardiola.
