Liverpool are planning a second attempt to lure Cristian Tello away from the Nou Camp. So we are told… They tried and failed to sign the young Barcelona winger in the summer, and now Talksport believe they will be up against Italian giants AC Millan to secure the signature of the young Spaniard.
Talksport claim the San Siro side will either make a £6.5 million bid in January, or with Tello, 21 unable to agree a new contract, look to gain his services on a free in the summer. If Brendan Rogers can get him to Anfield, Tello will want to play on the left, getting his colourful boots white, or alternatively, in behind Luis Suarez.
Rogers will be looking to play Suarez as his lead man and then Tello and Raheem Sterling on the left and right, exploiting the pace, trickery and vision the three will have.
The La Masia graduate would add a real spark to the the Liverpool starting 11 and Suarez would like the extra invention along side him, but Tello also needs to gain valuable experience, making the wrong decisions on occasions, which could infuriate the Kop.
That left attacking side is one area that needs to be strengthened with Stewart Downing failing to prove himself and Oussama Assaidi not gaining a first team place in the premier league side, but the real position that needs extra cover or even cover at all is the striking role.
With Suarez, the only out and out striker in the squad, Liverpool will be in real trouble if something happens to the Uruguayan, which must be a huge worry for Rogers and the Anfield faithful.
With rumours that Athletico Bilbao star Fernando Llorente might be moving away from the Spanish team in January or the summer, it might be an option that Rogers and his staff should be looking at, but they would have to fork out a huge sum and fight some of the biggest clubs around Europe for the Spaniard.
Suarez is currently the leading marksman in the premier league this season with 10 goals in 12 games, Liverpool only managing 17 in total, showing what a huge influence he has on the side, but they have no replacement who can step into his boots if required.
This lack of cover was shown when Liverpool played Young Boys in the Europa League on 22nd November, JonJo Shelvey played the lead role and he is in no way a striker. Recalling Andy Carroll from West Ham isn’t the answer with him struggling to find the back of the net at Upton Park, Rogers has to go else where, which will need to be mainland Europe.
If Rogers could land Tello and a striker of real quality, Liverpool could be a force to be reckoned with in the new year.
