Chelsea’s hunt for a right back continues, with Marseille’s Spanish right back Cesar Azpilicueta now seemingly among their list of targets.
Recent Champions League winners Chelsea are undergoing a summer of spending, having agreed to sign Lille’s Belgian winger Eden Hazard and Werder Bremen’s playmaker Marko Marin. Defensive reinforcements are also on the agenda though and Azpilicueta is believed to a target for new permanent manager Roberto di Matteo.
Their options at right back have been damaged with the departure of Jose Bosingwa after his contract expired, whilst Branislav Ivanovic wants to play as a centre back instead of at right back – though with Gary Cahill, David Luiz and John Terry on the books, is this a viable option for the Serbian defender?
The main target so far this summer has been Inter Milan’s flying right back Maicon, and some outlets were reporting that Chelsea were close to a deal for the 30 year old, but their interest has allegedly cooled, leading them to look for alternatives at right back. Having impressed at Euro 2012, Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy is another reported target for di Matteo, and has more room for development than Maicon, and with similar price tags I think Debuchy would be the better option.
But the Metro are saying that Spanish full back Azpilicueta is now their primary target, though they face competition from Athletic Bilbao. Azpilicueta is a Basque national, meaning he is eligible to play for Athletic, but with Andoni Iraola already there they may drop out of the race and use their money on other targets.
Make no mistake though, Chelsea need a new right back and adding someone younger like Debuchy or Azpilicueta would be a far better option than an ageing player like Maicon. Chelsea are in need of an injection of youth, not more 30-plus players that will have no re-sale value and claim huge wages for being ‘established’.
