For the first time in many years, everything appears to be rosy at Arsenal Football Club. The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League, have made a very good start to their Champions League campaign and have defeated their North London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur, already this season. Oh, and did anybody hear that they signed Mesut Ozil??
Yes, just under a month ago, Arsenal paid Real Madrid £42.5 million for the services of their German playmaker, smashing their transfer record in the process. However, as reported in The Express, Arsenal invincible Jens Lehmann claims that his former club ‘overpaid’ and the transfer fee was so high due to ‘Real Madrid losing the plot’ over their world record signing of Gareth Bale.
Does Lehmann have a point?
After finally securing a world record £85 million deal with Tottenham for Gareth Bale, Real Madrid were always going to look to recoup some of that fee, which alerted the Gunners to the availability of German international Mesut Ozil. Arsenal quickly secured a deal for the 24 year old and Arsene Wenger was instantly forgiven by his biggest critics (the fans) for all his transfer misgivings of the previous seasons.
Make no mistake, Ozil is a genuine world class talent. Cristiano Ronaldo aside, the German was one of the true shining lights of Jose Mourinho’s final season in charge at the Bernabeu last season. After only two Premier League games, Ozil already has three assists to his name, the highest in the league.
Quite simply, Ozil is a game changer. It is hard to think of any team that would pass on his talents and this conclusion can be further enhanced by the dismay felt by the Real Madrid players at his sale.
In a market where even Andy Carroll was allegedly worth £35 million, there is absolutely no doubt that Mesut Ozil is worth the fee that Arsenal shelled out for him.
