Manchester City look set to continue there summer spending spree, by launching a £30 million bid for Real Madrid and Argentina winger Angel Di Maria, 25, according to The Mirror. Man City have already spent £50 million this transfer window on Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fernandinho and Sevilla winger Jesus Navas.
It is reported that soon to be manager Manuel Pellegrini has given the green light to Man City boardroom to bid for the Real Madrid winger. Man City are looking to spend big this summer in order to improve on last season, where Man Utd won the title relatively unchallenged.
Di Maria started his career for Argentinian side Rosario Central, where he managed six goals in 35 appearances. After impressing in his home country, he secured a move to Portugese side S.L. Benefica in July 2007. During his time in Portugal, the winger managed 15 goals and 26 assists in 123 appearances. Following his impressive time in Portugal, he was rewarded with a €25 million move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2010. During his time at Madrid he has scored 25 goals and given 53 assists in 137 appearances.
Di Maria is an extremely quick and skillful player who is known for his ability to deliver a good final pass, something that is evident in his amount of assists. The Argentinian also boasts a powerful shot and certainly has an eye for goal. Excluding Messi and Ronaldo, Di Maria is arguably one of the best wingers in world football at the moment.
A player of Di Maria’s class would be welcome in any team in the world, and no more so then Man City. Last season they played far too centrally and really lacked width. The only true winger at the club is former Swansea star Scott Sinclair. With Jesus Navas on one side and Di Maria on the other, with David Silva and Fernandinho in between them, Man City would have a midfield that could challenge with the very best of Europe.
However is it likely that Manuel Pellegrini gets his man? Real Madrid are not exactly in financial trouble and do not need to sell. Last season saw rivals FC Barcelona stroll to yet another La Liga title, and if Real Madrid intend to challenge next season, they need to keep their best players and this includes Angel Di Maria.
Madrid may only be tempted to sell if they buy Welsh wizard Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur. If Bale did arrive, Di Maria would have to settle for a place on the bench and then may choose to look for a move away in order to acquire first team football. However in recent weeks Bale has come out publicly praising Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas, and so therefore hinting that he will stay in North London for at least one more year.
Di Maria is quoted in Argentinian newspaper Olé about his desire to stay in the Spanish capital, suggesting that he is not looking to switch clubs. Di Maria said:
I would love to stay. I’m happy with my team-mates and with how I’m treated.”
It would appear that Di Maria is just a step too far for the cash rich club from Manchester. He is perfectly happy in Madrid and Los Blancos are in a perfectly stable financial position as one of the richest clubs in the world and therefore do not need to sell. Bale is unlikely to arrive in the Spanish capital this summer and so Di Maria will remain an important player in the Madrid starting 11.
While it would please Premier League and Man City fans a like to see a player of Di Maria’s quality feature in the English top flight, it would seem that it is unlikely to happen. In Jesus Navas they already have a world class winger that will certainly improve their play next year, and so not getting Di Maria will not be too much of a loss for the blue side of Manchester.
