Spanish TV Show Punto Pelota has claimed that Atletico Madrid’s star striker Radamel Falcao will join Chelsea this summer. While specific information on the deal was not released, the fee is suspected to be in the region of £40 million, and this could also involve goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois moving permanently to the Spanish side, although the player himself has scoffed such a suggestion as per this Daily Mail piece.
Ever since Falcao’s European Super Cup demolition of Chelsea, the Blues have been linked with the 27-year-old Colombian. He has developed into one of the deadliest strikers in European football, and is averaging nearly a goal per game for Atletico this season. It was thought that Falcao would prefer a cross-city move to Real, but with the rival clubs keen to avoid such moves, Chelsea have swooped.
The arrival of Falcao would appear to be the final nail in Fernando Torres’ Chelsea career. With such a huge transfer fee involved, the European champions would probably look to recoup some money on their Spanish striker. How much they would receive for the man they paid £50 million for is hard to say.
Such a marquee signing would certainly provide a lift for the Blues after a tough season. It should also help to attract Abramovich’s top managerial target, and signal their intent to challenge the Manchester clubs in the league.
While he has flourished at Atletico, I believe Falcao would continue to improve if he moved to London. With the creative flair of Oscar, Mata, and Hazard, Falcao would slot seamlessly into the centre forward position, and has all the attributes to be a prolific Premier League scorer.
Rival clubs should beware the arrival of ‘The Tiger’.
