Barcelona are known admirers of Chelsea defender David Luiz and reports from Italian media claim the Spanish giants are looking to make a bit when the transfer window reopens this summer.
David Luiz cost The Blues €25 Million and is an important first team player, operating either at centre back or central midfield. His versatility has shown that he is a very valuable asset for Chelsea and in recent weeks, they have missed him in his absence.
When operating in midfield his passing ability can open up defences as he often looks for a quick, killer ball. Chelsea lacked some attacking impetus while he was sidelined with injury, and even from centre back his surges forward (though sometimes ill-advised) provide a sense of urgency and enthusiasm that he does not often get credit for.
Luiz was instrumental in Chelsea’s Champions League final victory, defending like his life depended on it partnering Gary Cahill at centre back and is contracted until 2017.
Another asset in Luiz’s arsenal is his free-kick taking. It is a skill he has developed over the past couple of seasons at Chelsea, honing a technique learned from Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard that has put him in contention to take every dangerous set piece position.
While Barcelona have arguably the best centre back partnership in the world in Puyol and Pique, as a team they have only kept 5 clean sheets so far this season in La Liga. Although Barca are truly dominating La Liga it seems Tito Vilanova will look to improve their defence for next season.
As a European rival, Barcelona would surely have to stump up big money to land one of Chelsea’s most exciting players.
