Credit to Andre Villas-Boas kicking off his post match presser by dedicating the win to Tony Parks and Tony’s son Joe. Earlier in the week the highly respected Tottenham goalkeeping coach’s son was involved in a serious car crash. Prior to the match in the warm up, Spurs players wore ‘Get Well Soon Joe’ tee shirts.
The Tottenham manager wasn’t going to drawn on comparisons with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in relation to Gareth Bale. And rightly so. The Welshman is magnificent player on his day, but he needs to play consistently well to be genuinely regarded as being in the same class as the world’s greatest. That said, his performance yesterday was astonishing.
It is sadly endemic of the modern press that a player cannot have a good run without being instantly being linked with a transfer to another club. If Tottenham were in the bottom half of the table, it would perhaps be natural to suggest that he had outgrown his club. But with Spurs on course for a return to Champions League football, it seems at best premature to be discussing a move.
