Giovanni Luigi, the president of Internacional gave an exclusive interview to Pasquale Cacciola and Gianluca Vitale of the Italian outlet Calcionapoli24 yesterday and confirmed that Tottenham had indeed made a bid last month for their striker Leandro Damiao.
Luigi was not specific as to when in the January window, but he was specific about the amount:
The only real interest and convinced came from England. Tottenham last January has submitted a bid of 20 million euro. If the player is still here, you can imagine what it means …”
The pursuit or perhaps more accurately the coverage of the pursuit dominated the back pages for the the bulk of the window, but there was always a suspicion that the ‘chase’ for Damiao by Tottenham was fueled as much by the press playing on the desire of Spurs fans to land a striker rather than anything concrete happening between the two clubs.
On transfer window deadline night, Sky Sports News’ Jim White shouted at us for hours on end that a deal could still happen; but it is patently obvious from reading the entire interview with the Internacional president that this was, ‘ambitious.’
As the hunt for a new Tottenham striker continues, Gareth Bale scores another two memorable goals and Andre Villas-Boas has the boys from White Hart Lane in 4th position, a point off Chelsea in 3rd.
