An 11th hour bid for another French player could see Newcastle’s contingent of French players increase to 7 according to The Sun. The latest is midfielder William Vainqueur, who currently playing in the top division of Belgian football for Standard Liege. Here’s the top 5 things we think Newcastle fans need to know about him.
Another French national who would fit easily into the team along with his fellow national players. He is a central midfielder meaning he can link up with the likes of Ben Arfa, Tiote, Cabaye, Sissoko, Gouffran and Cisse. Vainqueur has scored 5 goals and assisted 7 in his career including this potential goal of the season.
At 24 it appears he fits the bill that the likes of Ashley, Carr and Pardew are looking for when signing a player. According to The Sun the fee would be around £3 million which may be small enough to tempt Pardew and Co into a move for the midfielder.
The only down side appears to be that we seem to have quite a few central midfielders now in Cabaye, Tiote (who is back after AFCON), Sissoko and youngsters like Bigirimana and Gosling so we may see one of the 2 move on loan if Vainqueur was to be brought in.
Our aim is to recruit young players for the future. We go to France because it’s working. Arsenal had Henry, Vieira and Petit. At present, we know that we’re still developing.”
Hopefully if we sign him he can be another Vieira or Petit but that remains to be seen at the moment.
Vainqueur has represented France at u19 level back in the 2007/2008 season which came after making 9 appearances in Ligue 1 and 5 in Ligue 2 for Nantes. Since then he went off the international radar but his performances at Standard Liege and a potential move to Newcastle could see his international career take an upswing.
Despite his young age he has played in 157 games meaning he has averaged 26 games a season. He also has experience in the Europa League which could be a key selling point for Newcastle as they look to build a squad capable of challenging in Europe. His play is more about doing the simple things in a game, clearing up from the back, setting up play to go forward and breaking down attacking moves.
If he were to sign for Newcastle I believe it will see some of the younger players moving out on loan but will provide a challenge for Tiote, Cabaye and Sissoko among others.
