Everton have made a £9 million bid for Lyon’s Rachid Ghezzal, but Southampton and West Ham are in hot pursuit, according to the Daily Mail.
The Algerian can play on the wing or behind the striker, and his superb ball control and eye for goal, including the 10 he scored last season, has seen him draw comparisons with compatriot and last season’s PFA Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez. Everton feel he may be the right man to help bolster their front line after a disappointing 11th place finish last season.
After manager Ronald Koeman made it known that he does not intend to sell striker Romelu Lukaku this transfer window, Ghezzal would join the Belgian and £25 million man Yannick Bolasie in Everton’s front line as they look to push for a Champions League place.
Everton are not the only Premier league side interested in the 24-year-old, however. Southampton manager Claude Puel has made it known how much admiration he has for the player, and West Ham United are also said to be interested.
With other rumours suggesting that Leicester City and Sunderland are also keeping an eye on the winger, the Premier League may be about to witness a full-scale bidding war. With Lyon reportedly keen to sell to help free up their wage budget, it seems almost certain that Ghezzal will be playing Premier League football this season. Where he’ll do it, though, remains to be seen.
