The winter transfer window opens up on the 1st of January and Premier League teams with Champions League aspirations will have to strengthen their squads if they wish to take part in Europe’s elite competition. These are 3 players from La Liga that could move to a Premier League club this transfer window.
Steven N’Zonzi (Sevilla) – Arsenal
The former Blackburn and Stoke midfielder fell out of favour at Sevilla after a row with his manger Eduardo Berizzo, who substituted the Frenchman at halftime during their Champions League game against Liverpool.
N’Zonzi stands at 6’3 and could be seen as a powerful defensive anchor for Arsenal, exactly the type of player coaches and pundits have been asking from Arséne Wenger since the departure of Patrick Viera.
Wenger could use the 28 year old as the base of a 3 man midfield in front of a back four or play him alongside Granit Xhaka in a 3-5-2. Having a proper defensive midfielder could free Xhaka from his defensive responsibilities and allow him to dictate the pace of the game and drive forward like he used to do as the captain of Borussia Mönchengladbach.
A big athletic midfielder like N’Zonzi could be the key to finally unlocking Xhaka’s potential and allowing their forward trident to flourish. N’Zonzi would cost Arsenal around £35 million.
Arsenal are out of the title race and a top 4 finish is what they can aspire to. However, solidifying their midfield and leaning out their bloated wage bill has to be their target for their upcoming transfer window. Everton and Juventus are said to also be monitoring N’Zonzi.
Gonçalo Guedes (Valencia/PSG) – Chelsea
Antonio Conte has been extremely critical of the way the summer transfer window panned out and has complained about the depth of his squad. Gonçalo Guedes has been a revelation for Valencia this season but he is on loan from French giants Paris Saint Germain and that would mean a high asking price for the Portuguese starlet.
The 21 year old can play on both wings and could be seen as a potential replacement for Eden Hazard if the Belgian decided to move in the summer. Guedes has scored three goals and assisted another five in La Liga and has seen his stock rise with every performance.
Guedes has no space in the PSG squad and the French outfit could be enticed to cash in for the right price. Given his age and potential Guedes could command a fee around £60 million. Chelsea need depth if they want to go deep into the Champions League knock out stages and compete for a top 4 finish.
Sime Vrsaljko (Atlético Madrid) – Liverpool
Liverpool are continuing to pursue Atletico Madrid’s centre back Sime Vrsaljko – but face a battle with Napoli to land the Croatian international.
Vrsaljko is in search of regular first team football in a bid to secure a place on the plane to Russia next summer with his country. Liverpool have been breathtaking at times going forward but have been let down by defensive mistakes.
Liverpool’s defensive woes are well documented and with Manchester City reportedly pursuing Virgil van Dijk, Klopp needs a plan B and the Croatian has emerged as a perfect prospect. Vrsaljko would walk into the team and line-up next to Joël Matip or Joe Gomez.
